The Real Cost of Buying From the USA, Country by Country

We took a single $100 US product and followed it through customs to 46 countries. The exact same order lands tax-free at ~$145 in a dozen countries — but $205 in Brazil. Here's where US import taxes bite hardest, and where they barely register.

$205
Landed cost of a $100 order in Brazil — priciest of 46 countries (~60% tax).
$145
Landed cost in 12 tax-free countries — incl. Colombia, Korea, Australia, Singapore & Peru.
$60
The spread: import tax alone swings the delivered price by up to $60 on the same box.

"Tax-free up to" = the de minimis threshold below which no duty/tax is charged. Rate = the effective import tax on a $100 order above that threshold. Directional 2026 estimates for a general-merchandise personal import; see method.

🔥 Where US import taxes hurt most

  • Brazil — ~60% over just $50 (full breakdown). Lands at $205.
  • India — ~42%, taxed from the first dollar.
  • Turkey — a ~30% flat rate on small parcels from the US.
  • Nigeria — ~27% combined duty and VAT.
  • The EU — VAT from €0 since 2021: 19–23% everywhere.

💎 The quiet bargains

  • Colombia & South Korea — a US-specific $200 rule clears a $100 order tax-free.
  • Australia, NZ, Singapore, Malaysia — high thresholds, nothing owed.
  • Kuwait & Qatar — no VAT, under the duty threshold.
  • Peru, Philippines, Dominican Republic — $180–200 thresholds.

Why the gap is so wide

Two numbers decide almost everything: the de minimis threshold (the value under which a country charges nothing) and the tax rate above it. A generous threshold like Colombia's US-specific $200 means most personal orders never get taxed. A near-zero threshold like Brazil's $50, India's $0, or the EU's post-2021 €0 means tax hits almost every order — then the rate does the damage. Shipping and our forwarding fee are nearly flat across destinations (~$45 combined); the destination's tax code is what actually moves the price.

How we calculated this

We modeled one representative order: a $100 general-merchandise product bought in the US and forwarded internationally. Base delivered cost = $100 product + ~$30 international shipping (Selectido's 2026 average) + a $14.99 Selectido forwarding fee. De minimis thresholds are from Zonos' country customs data. Tax rates use each country's standard VAT/GST applied above the threshold; for Brazil, India, Nigeria and Turkey we use the documented combined personal-import rate, which is higher than VAT alone. We apply tax to the $100 declared value; some countries also tax shipping, and actual duty varies by product category. Figures are directional estimates for comparison, not a customs quote.

Frequently asked

Which country has the highest import tax on US orders?

Brazil — about 60% on personal imports over $50, so a $100 US product lands near $205. India (~42%), Turkey (~30%) and Nigeria (~27%) follow.

Which countries receive US orders tax-free?

About a dozen, including Colombia and South Korea (a US-specific $200 de minimis), Peru, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and the Dominican Republic — landing near $145 with shipping and forwarding.

How much does it cost to ship a $100 US product abroad?

About $145 delivered before tax: $100 product, ~$30 international shipping, and a $14.99 forwarding fee. Import tax is added on top based on the destination.

What is a de minimis threshold?

The order value below which a country charges no duty or tax. Above it the order is taxed; below it, it clears free. Thresholds range from $0 (India, Turkey, Nigeria) to $200+ (Peru, Colombia, Australia).
