USPS Hold Mail caps at 30 days. We don't.
If you're leaving the US for longer than a month — sabbatical, deployment, semester abroad, slow travel, snowbird season — USPS Hold Mail won't cover you. Selectido gives you a real US street address in Minneapolis that receives mail and packages indefinitely, scans urgent letters to your email, and forwards anywhere in the world on your schedule. $14.99 per shipment. No subscription. No 30-day cliff.
🇺🇸 Going away for under 30 days?
For trips of 3-30 days, the right answer is USPS Hold Mail — it's free, takes 5 minutes to request, and just pauses delivery to your existing US address. You don't need us for that.
🌍 Going away for more than 30 days?
USPS won't hold your mail longer than 30 days, and they don't offer extensions. For longer absences — sabbatical, deployment, study abroad, snowbird, slow travel — you need a real US address that holds mail indefinitely. That's what Selectido is.
Why USPS Hold Mail isn't enough for long-term absences
USPS Hold Mail is genuinely useful for short trips. It's free, it works, and it's the right tool for vacations. But it has structural limits that don't match the way people actually leave the country these days:
- Hard 30-day cap. The maximum hold is 30 days. There is no extension mechanism through USPS — once 30 days pass, delivery resumes whether you're back or not. Your mail starts piling up at your unoccupied home or apartment.
- USPS-only. Hold Mail only affects USPS-handled mail. Packages from UPS, FedEx, DHL, Amazon Logistics, and most e-commerce carriers will still be attempted at your address, often signature-required, often returned to sender or left on the porch.
- No remote access. You can't read your mail while it's on hold. If a tax notice or an urgent bank letter arrives during your absence, you only see it when you return — sometimes weeks late on a deadline.
- No forwarding outside the US. Hold Mail simply pauses delivery; it doesn't send your mail anywhere else. USPS does offer Premium Forwarding Service for domestic re-shipment but it caps at one year, costs $25.10 to enroll plus $26.50/week per re-shipment, and only forwards within the US.
- Doesn't accept new mail intentionally. Hold Mail is a "pause delivery" feature, not a "manage mail" feature. If you want to start using a more stable US address for important senders (banks, the IRS, employers, subscriptions) — something that won't change every time you move — Hold Mail can't do that.
The most common ways people search for a fix to this are: USPS mail hold extension, USPS hold mail extension, hold US mail longer than 30 days, longer than 30 days mail hold, indefinite mail hold US, hold mail while overseas, hold mail for 6 months, mail hold while traveling abroad, and USPS change of address abroad. They all lead to the same conclusion — there is no native USPS option that goes past 30 days, so the real answer is US mail forwarding for travelers with a real US street address.
Selectido fits the specific cases USPS doesn't: USPS hold mail military deployments, USPS hold mail sabbatical absences, college student mail hold for a semester abroad, mail hold for snowbirds with non-fixed itineraries, deployment mail forwarding to APO/FPO/DPO, and a virtual mailbox for travelers who want their US mail photographed, scanned on demand, and shipped where they actually are. This is what Selectido mail forwarding was built for.
Who actually needs an alternative to USPS Hold Mail
🌎 Long-term travelers and sabbaticals
Going abroad for 1-12 months. You'll have an unpredictable address (Airbnbs, hotels, friends' couches). You need a stable US address that holds mail until you're somewhere worth shipping it to.
🪖 Active-duty military deployments
OCONUS rotations of 6-18 months. You want bulk shipments forwarded to your APO/FPO/DPO every few weeks, plus the ability to scan urgent letters (W-2, IRS, ID renewals) to your email.
🎓 College students and interns abroad
Semester abroad, summer internship overseas, gap year. Your campus or hometown address can't hold mail for 4-9 months. The university keeps sending transcripts and aid notices to a US address.
🏖️ Snowbirds with non-fixed itineraries
You spend 4-6 months in one part of the US (or Mexico) and 4-6 months at home, but your travel schedule varies. You want one US address that stores mail and ships to whichever location you're at when you need it.
🌍 Expats and digital nomads
You live abroad but maintain US banking, US tax filing, and US-based subscriptions. You need a real US street address that banks accept and that forwards letters and packages internationally.
💼 Non-US business owners with US LLCs
You run a US LLC from outside the country. You need a US mailing address for state filings, IRS notices, bank statements, and vendor mail — long-term, not 30 days at a time.
How Selectido works as a USPS Hold Mail alternative
Sign up before you leave
Free signup. Inside the app, your Orders tab displays your unique Suite ID (e.g., SE-3YF8) plus the full Minneapolis mailing address. We recommend signing up 7-14 days before your departure date.
Update senders to your Selectido address
Banks, IRS, employer, subscriptions, voter mail, university — anything you want managed during your absence. The earlier you update them, the cleaner the handoff. (Things that stay at your home address keep arriving as normal.)
We receive + photograph + hold
Mail and packages arrive at our Minneapolis hub. We photograph the outside of each piece, log it in your Orders tab, and hold it indefinitely. First 30 days are free; after that, $2/day storage. You see what arrives in real time.
You decide what to do with each piece
For each item, you can: forward to your current location (US or international), scan-and-email if you need the contents urgently, or keep holding. You only pay $14.99 + carrier shipping when you actually forward something.
Selectido vs. USPS Hold Mail vs. USPS Premium Forwarding
| USPS Hold Mail | USPS Premium Forwarding | Selectido | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum duration | 30 days | 1 year | Indefinite |
| Cost | Free | $25.10 + $26.50/week | $14.99 per outbound + storage |
| Forwards to international addresses | No | No (US only) | Yes, 60+ countries |
| Receives non-USPS packages (UPS, FedEx, DHL) | No | No | Yes |

| Real US street address you can give to senders | N/A | N/A | Yes |
| Best for | Vacations 3-30 days | Domestic temporary move under 1 year | Anything longer than 30 days, especially international |
USPS Hold Mail is genuinely the right answer for 3-30 day trips. USPS Premium Forwarding is fine if you're temporarily moving to another US address. Selectido is the answer when neither of those fits — long absences, international destinations, or when you want to consolidate mail at one stable US address regardless of where you currently are.
Pricing — straightforward and a la carte
What's included in the $14.99:
- Receiving and logging your mail and packages at our US hub
- Photographing the outside of each item at intake
- Up to 30 days of free storage so you can consolidate
- Customs paperwork for international shipments
- Outbound carrier label + AfterShip tracking
- Occasional letter scans (no extra charge for up to ~5-10 scans/month)
What's charged separately:
- Actual carrier shipping — we charge what the carrier charges, no markup
- Storage past 30 days ($2/day, with email warning before fees kick in)
- Heavy scan workloads (more than 10 per month) — quote case-by-case
- Customs duties at your destination country
For active-duty military
Deployments are one of the cleanest use cases for Selectido. The way it typically works for service members:
- Sign up 1-2 weeks before deployment. Get your Suite ID.
- Update important senders to the Selectido address: USAA, Navy Federal, your branch's payroll office for tax docs, vehicle registration, voter mail, family communications.
- While deployed: we hold mail at the hub. You log into the Selectido app from wherever you have internet and see what's arriving. Time-sensitive items (W-2, IRS, ID renewals, court paperwork) get scanned and emailed.
- Bulk forwarding: every 4-6 weeks, you authorize us to ship a consolidated package to your APO/FPO/DPO address. We do the customs paperwork correctly for military APO addresses (which can be tricky because of weight/value caps and prohibited-item rules specific to APO routing).
- When you return CONUS: we resume normal forwarding to your stateside address, or you keep the service for the next rotation. No long-term contract.
The no-subscription pricing is specifically useful for deployments: your bill matches your actual forwarding usage during the rotation, not a fixed monthly fee whether you forward anything or not.
For college students and interns abroad
Universities still send a lot of physical mail — transcripts, financial-aid letters, alumni mail, jury notices that follow you, tax-related 1098-T forms. Most students who go abroad for a semester or longer end up with a stack of unopened envelopes when they return. Selectido replaces that. Update your school registrar, financial aid office, and any subscription accounts to your Selectido address, and we'll handle it while you're away. Scan urgent stuff to your email; forward the rest when you return.
Trust and safety
If you've used a mail forwarder before, you may have hit the usual concerns. Here's how Selectido approaches each:
- Privacy. We do not open letters by default. We photograph the outside of envelopes only. If you ask us to scan something open, only your team at the hub sees the contents long enough to upload the scan, and the original goes into your Orders folder unopened by others.
- Address legitimacy. Our address is a real US street address in Minneapolis, Minnesota — accepted by most banks, the IRS, retailers, universities, and government agencies. Not a PO Box, not a CMRA that triggers automatic bank flags.
- Carrier acceptance. We accept mail and packages from every major US carrier, including USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, Amazon Logistics, and Lasership.
- Insurance. Carrier insurance available on packages over $100 declared value (optional, recommended for high-value items).
- No data sharing. We don't sell mail-metadata to data brokers, advertisers, or marketing services. Read our privacy policy for details.
Frequently asked questions
USPS Hold Mail allows a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 30 days at a single US address. There's no mechanism to extend it through USPS. For longer absences, you need either USPS Premium Forwarding Service (forwards to another US address for up to a year) or a commercial mail forwarder like Selectido (no time limit, forwards internationally).
Three options. (1) Trusted friend or family member at their US address — free but depends on their reliability. (2) USPS Premium Forwarding Service — domestic only, $25.10 enrollment plus $26.50/week. (3) A commercial mail forwarder like Selectido — no time limit, holds indefinitely, scans on request, forwards to 60+ countries. $14.99 per outbound shipment, no subscription.
No 30-day cap. Real US street address you can give to senders. Accepts packages from UPS/FedEx/DHL/Amazon (not just USPS). Lets you read scans of urgent letters via email while abroad. Forwards to 60+ countries on demand.
Yes — for under 30 days, just use USPS Hold Mail. It's free and works fine. Selectido makes sense for absences over 30 days, international destinations, or when you expect non-USPS packages while gone.
Yes. We hold mail indefinitely, scan urgent items, and forward bulk shipments to APO/FPO/DPO addresses with the correct customs documentation. No subscription means your bill matches your actual forwarding during the rotation.
Our Minneapolis address is a real US street address, not a PO Box. Most US banks, brokerages, the IRS, retailers, and universities accept it. Some institutions require a residential address (rather than mail-receiving) — those are exceptions. Email us before signup if you want to confirm for your specific bank.
Yes — recommend signing up 7-14 days before departure so you have time to update senders. Your Suite ID is available the moment you complete signup.
Both. Outside-of-envelope photos at intake are automatic. Open-and-scan requests are free for occasional use (up to ~5-10 per month). Heavy scan workloads get a custom quote.
USPS COA redirects your mail to a new US address for up to 12 months. It's the right tool if you're permanently moving within the US. It does not work if you're temporarily away, want mail outside the US, or want non-USPS packages handled. For long absences with a planned return, Selectido is generally cleaner.
USPS Hold Mail is free for 30 days. After that it stops. Selectido is $14.99 per outbound shipment + actual carrier shipping, no subscription. For a typical 6-month absence with forwarding every 6-8 weeks, total Selectido service fees usually fall between $60 and $100.
