iPhone 18 Pro & iPhone Duo: what international buyers need to know

Apple's new Pro lineup is here — and its first foldable iPhone is real. We break down the U.S. prices, the specs that matter, the Duo's folding hardware, eSIM, customs classification, lithium-battery shipping rules, warranty considerations and the safest way to forward one abroad.

Apple's September launch created two very different reasons to upgrade. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max push the traditional iPhone formula forward with variable-aperture photography, the A20 Pro chip and longer battery life. The iPhone Duo is the bigger shift: a book-style foldable with a 7.6-inch inner display, 5.4-inch outer display, titanium folding design and iOS 27 experiences built around multiple positions and a larger canvas.

The international-buying angle: the headline U.S. price is only one part of the decision. Before forwarding a new iPhone, check eSIM support, your local import taxes, warranty/service limits and the carrier's lithium-battery rules. A $2,000–$3,200 foldable deserves more planning than a normal parcel.

U.S. prices: iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and iPhone Duo

Apple sells all three lines in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations. The Duo carries a major premium for its foldable hardware.

The foldable iPhone is officially the iPhone Duo

The Duo is Apple's first folding iPhone. Closed, it uses a 5.4-inch outer OLED display. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch folding OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display support and a nano-texture finish. Apple says both displays use the same aspect ratio so content scales more naturally as the device opens and closes.

Opened, the Duo is about 5.2 mm thick; folded, it is about 11.3 mm. It weighs 254 grams and comes in Night Sky and Star White. Apple rates it IP68 for water and dust resistance — notable for a first-generation foldable.

Two 120Hz displays

7.6-inch inner OLED plus a 5.4-inch outer OLED. Both support ProMotion and Always-On.

✏️

Apple Pencil support

Apple lists support for Apple Pencil (USB-C), turning the unfolded screen into a small writing and markup canvas.

🔐

Touch ID returns

The Duo uses a Touch ID fingerprint sensor rather than Face ID, integrated into its side-button design.

🔋

Dual-battery architecture

Apple uses batteries across both halves of the device. That matters when choosing an international carrier.

The 18 Pro camera change is more than software

The iPhone 18 Pro's 48MP Fusion Main camera introduces variable aperture with four settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. Apple uses six physical aperture blades, giving the camera more control over light and depth of field rather than relying only on computational blur.

The Pro models also include 48MP Ultra Wide and 48MP Telephoto cameras. That is one of the biggest reasons to choose a Pro over the Duo: the foldable has a 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide system, but no dedicated telephoto camera.

A20 Pro, Wi-Fi 7 and battery life

All three flagship models use the A20 Pro with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and dual 16-core Neural Engines. The Pro models and Duo also support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

Apple rates iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback and Pro Max for up to 45 hours. The Duo is rated for up to 44 hours using the outer display or 31 hours using the inner display.

International buyers: check eSIM before you buy

The Duo is explicitly eSIM-only: Apple lists Dual eSIM, two active eSIMs, storage for eight or more eSIMs and no physical SIM-card compatibility. Before ordering for another country, confirm that your mobile carrier can provision an eSIM for the model you are buying.

Do not assume “unlocked” automatically means “works everywhere.” A phone can be carrier-unlocked and still require compatible network bands and an eSIM-capable carrier. For cross-border purchases, check the exact Apple model and your carrier before paying.

Customs: what should an iPhone be declared as?

Under the Harmonized System, smartphones are classified under HS 8517.13. Individual countries can extend that six-digit code with additional tariff digits, so the final customs code used on an import entry may be longer.

The merchandise value should reflect the actual value of the phone. Customs authorities may collect VAT, GST, import duty, processing fees or other taxes depending on the destination. A country with zero customs duty on smartphones can still have a substantial VAT/GST bill on a $1,999 or $3,199 device.

For that reason, international buyers should think in terms of landed cost: phone price + U.S. sales tax if applicable + forwarding/shipping + destination tax/duty + any carrier clearance fee.

Can the new iPhones be shipped internationally with lithium batteries?

New smartphones commonly travel internationally with the rechargeable lithium-ion battery installed in the device, but the shipping service and destination must allow it. USPS, for example, permits qualifying lithium-ion batteries internationally only when they are properly installed in the equipment, subject to quantity, watt-hour, packaging and country restrictions.

USPS's current international rule allows a maximum of two lithium-ion batteries per shipment when installed in equipment, with each battery limited to 100 Wh. Because Apple describes iPhone Duo as using a dual-battery architecture, it deserves an extra carrier check before the label is purchased. Other carriers can apply their own acceptance, service and destination rules.

Important: a phone with its installed battery is not the same shipping category as a loose power bank or spare battery. Do not add standalone lithium batteries to the parcel without checking the specific carrier rules.

One more international issue: warranty service

Apple's U.S. warranty terms say the company may restrict iPhone warranty service to the country where Apple or an authorized distributor originally sold the device. International service can sometimes be available, but options, parts and response times vary by country.

That matters especially for the first-generation Duo. A folding display and hinge introduce hardware that is more specialized than a conventional iPhone. If you are buying a U.S. unit primarily to save money or get earlier availability, include the warranty/service tradeoff in the decision.

Release dates and colors

Which one makes the most sense?

Choose iPhone 18 Pro if you want the newest Pro camera system in a smaller body and the lowest price of these three. Choose Pro Max if battery life and a large conventional display matter most.

Choose iPhone Duo if the 7.6-inch folding screen is the reason you are upgrading. It is dramatically more expensive, heavier than Pro Max, and gives up the dedicated telephoto camera — but it is also the only one that turns from a compact phone into a small tablet-style workspace.

For international buyers, the best device is not automatically the one with the lowest U.S. price. Check your carrier, calculate the destination taxes, understand the warranty position, and use an international shipping service that can correctly handle a high-value lithium-battery device.

International buyer FAQ

How much is the iPhone Duo in the U.S.?

$1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB, before applicable U.S. sales tax.

Is iPhone Duo really Apple's first foldable?

Yes. Apple officially introduced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026 as its first foldable iPhone.

Can Selectido ship a new iPhone internationally?

In many cases, yes, using a carrier/service that accepts the installed lithium-ion battery and the destination. Exact availability depends on the country, device condition and carrier rules.

What customs code is used for an iPhone?

The six-digit HS 2022 subheading for smartphones is 8517.13. Destination countries can add additional tariff digits.

Can I declare a lower value to reduce customs?

No. The customs declaration should accurately reflect the merchandise value. An inaccurate value can create clearance, penalty and insurance problems.

Can Selectido purchase the phone for me?

Eligible Assisted Purchase requests can be reviewed. Because these models start above $1,000, an iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max or Duo purchase requires manual review and a custom Assisted Purchase quote.
