Why US chocolate actually tastes different

There's a real recipe gap between US chocolate and chocolate sold under the same brand name in Europe, Latin America, or Asia. The most famous example is Hershey's: the US recipe processes milk in a way that produces butyric acid, giving Hershey's its signature slightly-tangy taste. The European version uses a different process and tastes noticeably sweeter and rounder. EU rules also restrict what can be labeled "milk chocolate" — in some EU markets, US Hershey's can't legally use that label. Reese's has similar regional formulation differences. Cadbury sold in the US is made by Hershey under license and tastes nothing like UK Cadbury.

Beyond recipe gaps, several US chocolate brands have effectively zero international distribution: Reese's Big Cup, Sticks, and Take 5, Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme, Mr. Goodbar, Almond Joy, Mounds, Krackel, Heath bar, Whatchamacallit, and the entire See's Candies brand (who ship within the US and Canada only). For these, the only way to taste them outside the US is to forward them.

How we ship US chocolate without melting it

  1. Tell us your destination and timing. Hot destination in summer? We'll route express + insulated. Cool weather window? Standard shipping is fine.
  2. We source from cool, reliable inventory. Target, Walmart, Costco, See's storefronts, Trader Joe's (via live shopper). We avoid sun-exposed grocery aisles.
  3. Insulated packing + ice packs. For May–September routes to UAE, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Philippines, Mexico, India. Adds $8–15 to the box.
  4. Express shipping. 3–5 days FedEx/DHL Express keeps chocolate in transit before heat exposure compounds.
🍫 Insider note: If you want US chocolate at its absolute best, ship November–March. We hold orders for hot destinations until temperature drops, no charge.

The questions everyone asks

Why does US Hershey's taste different than Hershey's bought abroad?
Different milk fat treatment. Hershey's US uses butyric acid in its processed milk (the slightly tangy taste people either love or hate). The European version uses a different process that removes that tang. The EU also has stricter chocolate composition rules: in some markets, the US version can't legally be called "milk chocolate." If you grew up on US Hershey's, only the US version tastes right.
Can you ship Reese's internationally?
Yes — Reese's is our top forwarded chocolate brand by volume. Korea, the UK, the Philippines, and the UAE are obsessed. The full lineup ships: Cups (standard, Big Cup, Miniatures), Pieces, Sticks, Take 5, Puffs Cereal, holiday shapes (Pumpkins, Hearts, Eggs, Trees), and limited editions.
Will chocolate melt in transit?
It can. For summer routes (May–September) to hot destinations (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Philippines, Mexico, India), we use insulated boxes, ice packs (where allowed), and recommend express shipping (3–5 days). November–March: most destinations are safe with standard shipping. We'll flag any temperature risk before booking.
Can you ship See's Candies internationally?
Yes — See's only ships within North America. Their California cult lineup (lollypops, scotchmallows, peanut brittle, butterscotch lollipops, Easter eggs, holiday assortments) is forwarded weekly to UK, Korea, Japan, Mexico. Tell us the box and we'll source from a See's storefront.
How much does it cost to ship chocolate abroad?
A typical 5–10 lb chocolate box: $40–60 to Mexico/Canada, $55–90 to UK/EU, $65–110 to MENA, $70–125 to Asia. Insulated summer packaging adds $8–15 to the box. Forwarding fee is $14.99 flat per package.
What US chocolate doesn't exist in my country?
Reese's Big Cup, Reese's Sticks, Reese's Take 5, Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme, Mr. Goodbar, Whatchamacallit, Almond Joy, Mounds, Heath bar, Krackel, Hershey's Gold, Hershey's Nuggets, See's Candies (entire brand), Ghirardelli SQUARES (US lineup), Andes Mints, Junior Mints, Whoppers, York Peppermint Patties — all US-only or US-recipe-only.
Can you ship Ghirardelli or other premium US chocolate?
Yes — Ghirardelli SQUARES, gift boxes, baking chips, hot cocoa packets all forward easily. We also forward Lindt US-exclusive flavors, Russell Stover, Whitman's, and craft US chocolatiers.
Are seasonal chocolates available year-round?
No — most seasonal chocolates (Reese's Pumpkins, Cadbury Creme Eggs US version, Hershey's Kisses Hugs Valentine's, Easter Eggs) are only on shelves for 6–10 weeks before the holiday. Book early. Holiday boxes get expensive after the holiday (resale value spikes).
