Why Brazilians import US snacks

Brazil has a passionate import-snack culture — visit any "loja de importados" in São Paulo or Rio and you'll see Reese's, Pop-Tarts, and Hershey's marked up 4–6x retail. Brazilians import US snacks because: (1) Hershey's chocolate in the US uses different milk processing — the US recipe tastes nothing like the Brazilian version made under license; (2) Reese's isn't reliably stocked outside of the giant São Paulo importers, and when it is, it's R$30+ per Big Cup; (3) Pop-Tarts US flavors (Frosted S'mores, Hot Fudge Sundae) don't exist in Brazil; (4) Lucky Charms with US food dyes — banned-dye versions are part of the appeal for some buyers; (5) Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Trader Joe's products are not available in Brazil at all. The "muambeira" route (informal Paraguay re-export) is risky and inconsistent — Selectido is direct from a US shopper to your door with tracking.

Shipping route + transit time

From Minneapolis to Brazil we ship DHL Express Worldwide with door-to-door tracking. Transit time to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, and Belo Horizonte: 5–8 business days including customs clearance. DHL clears most snack shipments at Viracopos (Campinas) for SP-bound packages. Smaller cities add 1–3 days for final-mile via DHL's local partner. FedEx International Priority is the alternative for boxes over $500 declared value.

⚠️ Brazil customs heads-up: Brazil's de minimis is roughly $50 USD for personal-use imports through couriers (Receita Federal's "remessa internacional" rules). Above that you'll pay 60% Imposto de Importação + 17–25% ICMS depending on state. We work with this in two ways: (1) declare under $50 when honest to do so (multiple small shipments), or (2) pre-pay all duties on your behalf via DHL's "Duty Paid" service — pricier per box but zero hassle on arrival.

Two ways we keep Brazil shipping affordable

Strategy 1: Multiple small boxes under R$300

If you want 2–3 distinct snack types, we can split into separate shipments, each declared under $50 USD. Each ships independently. You pay shipping per box but no duty.

Strategy 2: One big DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) box

If you want a big care package (10+ lbs of US snacks), it's cheaper to ship one DDP box. We pre-pay all import taxes, you receive it with no surprises and no Receita Federal portal step. Costs more upfront but saves the headache.

How long does shipping snacks to Brazil take?
5–8 business days via DHL Express from our Minneapolis hub to São Paulo, Rio, Brasília, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, and Belo Horizonte. Smaller cities add 1–3 days for final-mile delivery.
Will I pay customs on US snacks to Brazil?
Brazil's personal-use de minimis is roughly $50 USD. Above that, expect 60% Imposto de Importação plus state ICMS (17–25%). We can either split into small under-$50 shipments or use DHL DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) so you pay nothing on arrival.
What's the difference between the 'muambeira' route and Selectido?
Muambeira is informal Paraguay re-export — cheap when it works but slow, inconsistent, and untracked. Selectido is a direct US-to-Brazil DHL shipment with tracking, declared honestly, and insured. Per snack, the costs are similar, but you actually get what you ordered.
Why is US Hershey's so different from Brazilian Hershey's?
US Hershey's uses a fermentation process on the milk fat that gives it a slightly tangy, distinctive flavor. The Brazilian version (made under license by Bauducco/Hershey's Brazil) uses different milk processing and tastes closer to Cadbury or Lacta — a totally different chocolate.
Can you ship Lucky Charms with US dyes to Brazil?
Yes. Lucky Charms uses food dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1) that some EU markets restrict — Brazil's ANVISA allows them. We ship the standard US Lucky Charms boxes directly.
Do you accept Pix or Brazilian Reais?
We bill in USD, but Brazilian Visa, Mastercard, and Elo credit cards work. We don't currently accept Pix or boleto bancário. Most Brazilian cards charge a 1.1% IOF tax + bank FX spread (~2–4% combined).
Can you ship to Brazil's Caixas Postais or Correios PO boxes?
DHL Express requires a physical street address with a doorman or recipient available. We can't ship to Caixas Postais. Apartment addresses with porteiro work fine.
What if Receita Federal opens my box on arrival?
Routine for boxes over $50 USD. They open the carrier paperwork, check the declared contents match, and either release or hold for duty payment. We give DHL accurate HS codes for every item so opens are quick. If they hold a box, you'll get a Receita Federal notification — we'll help you pay the duty through DHL's portal.
