Why Japanese collectors import US snacks
Japan has a snack collector culture that rivals any country in the world. Limited-edition packaging, seasonal flavors, and small-batch variants are bought, traded, and photographed for SNS (Instagram, X) constantly. Oreo Limited Editions (Birthday Cake, Java Chip, S'mores, Mystery flavor drops, Halloween/Christmas packaging) are the most-collected category — Japanese Oreo retail only carries a handful of flavors, and never the LTOs. Pop-Tarts US flavors (Frosted S'mores, Hot Fudge Sundae, Cookies & Crème) — none of these are sold in Japan and they're highly Instagrammable. Reese's Big Cup Stuffed varieties (the ones with Pieces, Caramel, Crunchy Cookie filling) are inconsistent at Don Quijote and Costco Japan. Hershey's US recipe (the fermented-milk version) tastes meaningfully different from Hershey's Japan and US-recipe imports are sought after. Trader Joe's is completely absent in Japan — Cookie Butter, Joe-Joe's, Everything But The Bagel are constant requests. Japan's 個人輸入代行 (kojin yunyuu daikou = personal import agent) service category covers what we do.

Shipping route + transit time
From Minneapolis to Japan we ship USPS Priority Mail Express International (5–8 days, hands off to Japan Post) or FedEx International Priority (3–5 days express). Transit time to Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Sendai: 5–8 business days. Japan Post handles final-mile for USPS shipments — they're famously reliable.
🎌 個人輸入 (kojin yunyuu = personal import) protections. Japan customs is straightforward and reasonable for snack shipments. The de minimis is ¥10,000 (~$67 USD) declared CIF value — below that, no duty. Above, expect ~10% duty on confectionery + 10% consumption tax. Japan Post Express (EMS) and DHL clear most snack boxes at Tokyo or Osaka customs within 24–48 hours.
Customs heads-up
Snack imports for personal use under ¥10,000 declared value have no duty. Larger boxes pay duty + consumption tax on arrival. Japan does not allow certain meat-based snacks (some beef jerky brands, ham/sausage snacks) due to BSE-era regulations — we'll flag these. Dairy-heavy items also have additional disclosure requirements; we handle the paperwork.

How much does shipping cost to Japan?
Forwarding fee $14.99 + carrier shipping. A typical 5–10 lb box: $55–95 via USPS or FedEx. FedEx is faster but $10–20 more.
Will I pay customs duty in Japan?
Japan's de minimis is ¥10,000 (~$67 USD) declared CIF value. Below that, no duty. Above, ~10% duty on confectionery + 10% consumption tax. Customs clears most snack boxes within 24–48 hours.
Can you ship Oreo Limited Editions to Japan?
Yes — they're our most-shipped Japan item. We pick up at US Target, Walmart, or Walgreens where LTO stock rotates weekly. We can shop live on FaceTime so you see what's actually available.
Are some American snacks banned in Japan?
Some meat-based snacks (specific beef jerky brands, ham/sausage snacks) face BSE-era restrictions. We flag these before shipping. Most candy, chocolate, cereal, cookies, and chips are completely fine.
Why does US Hershey's taste different from Japan Hershey's?
US Hershey's uses a milk-fermentation process that gives it a distinctive slightly tangy flavor. Japan Hershey's (made under license) uses standard milk processing — closer to Meiji's chocolate. Many Japanese collectors specifically want the US-recipe version.
Do you accept payment in JPY?
We bill in USD. Japanese Visa, JCB, and Mastercard cards all work — your bank converts JPY at the daily rate. Mercari / PayPay don't currently process international USD for us.
Can you ship to a Japanese apartment with mansion/apato number?
Yes — Japan Post and DHL deliver to mansion/apato addresses. Include full address with -chome, -banchi, -go, and room/building number. We help format the address if needed.
