PayPal blocked your US checkout. Now what?

PayPal occasionally blocks international users from checking out at US merchants. Sometimes the block is on the buyer side (PayPal's risk model flags your account), sometimes on the seller side (the merchant has restricted international PayPal). Either way, you get the same useless error: "Sorry, we couldn't complete your payment. Try a different method."

Selectido sidesteps PayPal entirely. We pay the US merchant with our US business card and US PayPal account; you pay us via Stripe (or PayPal if you prefer — but you're paying Selectido, not the US merchant, so there's no cross-border friction).

Why PayPal blocks happen

The Selectido routing

  1. You send us the item / link. Whatever you wanted to buy at the US merchant.
  2. We pay the merchant with our US PayPal or US card. Zero international friction — it's a clean US-to-US transaction.
  3. You pay Selectido. Stripe accepts Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Wise, Revolut, PayPal, and dozens of local methods (iDEAL, Bancontact, OXXO, Pix, etc.). You pay in your currency.
  4. We ship to your door. Forwarding fee $14.99 + actual carrier rate.

What if I don't have a credit card at all?

Bank transfer works. We accept Wise (most countries), Revolut (most of Europe + MENA), local-currency bank transfer (USA, Mexico, Brazil via Pix, India via UPI on request), and even cash voucher payments (OXXO in Mexico, Boleto in Brazil). The point is: getting money to Selectido is easy. Getting it from you to a US merchant via PayPal is what's hard. Let us handle the latter.

Common scenarios where this saves the day

  1. You ordered, PayPal failed, you tried 3 times, you got rate-limited. Now your PayPal is shadow-blocked at that merchant for 24-72 hours. Use Selectido instead.
  2. The merchant only accepts PayPal. Some niche US sellers (eBay private sellers, small Shopify shops) only take PayPal. If yours is blocked, we pay them with our PayPal — you pay us with anything.
  3. Cross-border high-value purchase. $1000+ items often trip PayPal's risk model. Selectido normalizes the transaction.

The questions everyone asks

Why does PayPal block some US merchant checkouts for international users?
Two main reasons: (1) PayPal's risk algorithm flags first-time foreign-account-to-US-merchant transactions, especially on high-value or restricted categories, and (2) some US merchants manually restrict PayPal payments to US-only buyers to reduce chargeback exposure. The buyer sees the same generic 'couldn't complete payment' error in both cases.
Does Selectido use PayPal to pay US merchants?
Sometimes — for merchants that prefer PayPal (eBay private sellers, smaller Shopify shops), we pay with our US-verified PayPal Business account in good standing. For most large retailers we use our US credit card, which has cleaner transaction rates.
Can I pay Selectido with PayPal?
Yes — we accept PayPal from any country PayPal supports. You're paying Selectido (a US business), not the original US merchant, so there's no cross-border block. Stripe and PayPal both work.
What payment methods does Selectido accept?
Stripe: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link, plus local methods like iDEAL, Bancontact, EPS, SEPA, P24, Sofort, OXXO (Mexico), Boleto (Brazil), Pix (Brazil), UPI (India on request), Konbini (Japan), GrabPay (SEA). Also: PayPal, Wise, Revolut, bank wire.
What if I don't have a credit card?
Bank transfer works. Wise (most countries), Revolut, local-currency transfers (Pix in Brazil, UPI in India, SEPA in EU, etc.), and even cash voucher payments (OXXO in Mexico, Boleto in Brazil) all work for paying Selectido. The cross-border friction is on the Selectido-to-US-merchant leg, which we handle ourselves.
Will Selectido charge my card more than once?
We charge upfront once you confirm the quote (item + shipping + fees). If there's a price change during shopping or shipping, we'll confirm before any additional charge. Refunds for unavailable items or returns are processed within 3-5 business days.
Is paying Selectido safer than the original PayPal attempt?
Functionally yes — you're paying one US business via Stripe (PCI-DSS Level 1 compliant), not multiple US merchants individually. Your card and bank only see one Selectido transaction; the cross-border risk decisions only happen once.
Does PayPal Buyer Protection still apply?
Yes if you pay Selectido via PayPal — PayPal Buyer Protection covers your Selectido transaction. For Stripe and credit card payments, you have chargeback rights through your card issuer. Either way you're protected; we recommend whichever method is most convenient for you.
