Two different walls
Most guides only tell you about the first one.
The payment wall is the familiar one. Sephora's US checkout verifies your billing address against what your card issuer holds. A foreign billing address usually has nothing to match against, and the order fails at payment. This is the wall people try to solve with a different card.
The territory wall is the one that actually matters, and it does not care about your card at all. Beauty brands license their products by region. A brand may grant Sephora the right to sell in the United States while a different distributor holds your country. Sephora is contractually unable to send you that product, and no payment method changes that. It is why an order can clear payment and still be cancelled later.
- Address verificationYour billing address is checked against the issuer's records. No US record, no match, no sale.
- Card issuing countryThe card's leading digits identify the issuing bank and its country before payment is even attempted.
- Brand territory restrictionsThe item is licensed for US sale only. This is a contract between the brand and the retailer, not a fraud rule, and it is the reason a working US card still isn't enough.
What we won't do
- Rotate addresses to defeat a retailer's block. One registered facility, one suite number, visible for what it is.
- Camp limited drops or run multiple accounts. One shopper, one store, within the brand's purchase limit.
- Under-declare, or call a purchase a gift. That's customs fraud, and the penalty falls on you as the importer.
- Mislabel a fragrance to get it onto an aircraft.
What we will do
- Buy it as an ordinary US customer — in a store, on video if you want to watch, with the receipt going in the box.
- Tell you before you pay if an item is territory-restricted, is a regulated fragrance, or lands more expensive than your local price.
- Declare the honest value and show you the duty in advance.
- Say no when the answer is no.
What a haul actually lands at
Cosmetics duty ranges from nothing to more than half the value of the box.
This is the number the old version of this page got badly wrong. It quoted a flat "$320–375 all-in" for a $200 order and never mentioned import duty at all. For a customer in Singapore, where a $200 order falls under the duty-free threshold, that estimate was about right. For a customer in Brazil — where cosmetics carry a 60% duty rate, with 20% ICMS applied on top of the duty and the freight — the same order picks up $196 in duty and tax that the estimate simply left out. The person finds out when the courier asks them for it at the door.
Tick the box above if you want us to pay the store first and settle with you afterwards. Leave it unticked if you'll pre-fund your Selectido wallet.
Duty rates and de-minimis thresholds come from the same dataset as our shipping matrix. Courier cost is estimated from weight and destination; you're invoiced the carrier's actual rate. Fragrance is excluded from this estimate — see below for why.
Perfume is not a normal parcel
And nobody selling you a forwarding subscription wants to explain why.
Alcohol-based fragrance is a regulated dangerous good. For air transport it is classified UN1266, Class 3 flammable liquid. That has consequences no amount of careful bubble wrap changes:
- It can only travel with a carrier licensed to accept dangerous goods, in compliant packaging, with the right documentation. Not every express service will take it, and not on every lane.
- Postal services generally will not carry it internationally at all. If a forwarder's cheap postal option is what made the numbers work for you, fragrance is not going in that box.
- Small volumes may qualify for limited-quantity handling, which is why a single travel-size bottle is often possible where a full-size gift set is not.
- Some destinations prohibit importing it outright, and several restrict alcohol content. That is your country's law, and it applies to the parcel whatever the paperwork says.
Authenticity, plainly
We buy at retail — in a Sephora store, or on Sephora's own site — and the receipt travels in the box. That is the entire basis of the claim, and it's a stronger one than any certificate. We hold no inventory, we are not a distributor, and we don't source from wholesalers or grey-market suppliers, because we'd have no way to verify what those actually are.
If you want to watch the purchase happen, book a live video session. You see the shelf, the shade, the batch code and the till.
How it works
- Send us the listProduct names and shades. We check availability and flag anything territory-restricted or fragrance-classified before you pay a cent.
- We buy it at retailOptionally on live video ($75/hr, 15% off two hours or more) so you can confirm shades against your skin before we hand over the card.
- You pay in your own currencyCard, Apple Pay, PayPal, Wise and local methods, via Stripe.
- It ships with the receipt and an honest declarationForwarding is $14.99 plus the carrier's actual rate. You saw the duty estimate before you committed.
Send us your wishlist
Paste the products you were trying to buy and tell us your country. We'll flag what's territory-restricted, what counts as a dangerous good, and what the whole thing lands at — before you spend anything.
Questions people actually ask
Usually one of two things, sometimes both. Your payment failed address verification because your billing address is not a US address the card issuer can confirm. Or the item itself is territory-restricted: many beauty brands grant Sephora US the right to sell only within the US, so the catalogue you see is not the catalogue you are permitted to receive. The second reason is why fixing your payment method alone often changes nothing.
No. We ship to one registered facility, and you get your own suite number at it. We do not rotate addresses, use residential drop addresses, or otherwise try to disguise where a parcel is going in order to defeat a retailer's controls. If a retailer will not ship to our address, we will tell you, and a live in-store purchase is usually the way through.
We will look, in one store, as one customer, within whatever purchase limit the brand has set. We do not queue overnight, run multiple accounts, use checkout bots, or exceed per-customer limits to obtain limited releases. If that is what you need, we are not the right service. Most of what people call impossible to get is simply in stock in a physical store on a normal weekday.
Sometimes, and it depends on your country and the product. Alcohol-based fragrance is a regulated dangerous good for air transport, classified UN1266, Class 3 flammable liquid. It requires a carrier licensed to accept dangerous goods, compliant packaging and documentation, and it is often restricted to small volumes. Postal services generally will not carry it internationally at all, and some destinations prohibit importing it entirely. Ask us before you buy the fragrance rather than after. We will not relabel a fragrance as something else to get it on a plane.
We buy at retail, in a Sephora store or on Sephora's own site, and the receipt travels in the box. That is the whole basis for the claim. We are not a distributor, we hold no stock, and we do not source from wholesalers or grey-market suppliers, because we have no way to verify what those are.
The product price, plus US sales tax where the purchase is made, plus your country's import duty and VAT if the value is above your de-minimis threshold, plus actual carrier shipping, plus a $14.99 forwarding fee. Cosmetics duty varies enormously by country — from zero, up to 60% in Brazil. The calculator above works it out for your country. For some destinations a Sephora haul lands cheaper than local retail, and for some it very clearly does not. If you have not pre-funded your Selectido wallet and we pay the store on your behalf, we add a 5% advance fee calculated on the item price plus US sales tax — not on duty, VAT or shipping. Book a live video session and there is no advance fee, because you fund the wallet and your shopper spends from it.
Only by shipping it back to us in the US, at your cost, inside Sephora's return window, which starts when we buy it and not when it reaches you. Opened cosmetics are frequently non-returnable regardless. Realistically, treat an international beauty order as final, and ask us to check shade, size and formulation on video before we pay.
It is customs fraud, the penalties land on you as the importer, and we will not do it. We declare what the items cost. The calculator on this page shows you the real number in advance precisely so there is no incentive to find out the hard way.
Selectido is an independent shopping and package-forwarding service. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, authorised by, or a partner of Sephora USA, Inc., or of any beauty brand named on this page. Brand and retailer names are used only to describe products our customers ask us to buy and the checkout problems they report to us. We purchase openly at retail with our own US payment methods, declare honest values on every customs form, observe published purchase limits, and comply with retailer terms of service. Duty and tax figures are planning estimates, not a customs ruling. Dangerous-goods acceptance is determined by the carrier and by your country's import law, not by us.
