Why Mercari buyers outside the US need a US shopper
Mercari is two completely different marketplaces sharing a brand name. Mercari US is the second-largest peer-to-peer marketplace in America after eBay — it dominates Pokémon TCG sealed product, Nintendo Switch hardware, vintage Levi's, Le Creuset, Stanley tumbler resale, Sony electronics open-box, Funko Pop exclusives, and Magic: The Gathering. Mercari Japan (メルカリ) is the largest peer-to-peer marketplace in Japan and the single best source on the planet for original Japanese collectibles — Pokémon Japanese-language cards, Yu-Gi-Oh OCG, Showa-era manga, anime cels, Tamagotchi, vintage Famicom games, and Japan-only branded resale.
Neither Mercari site ships internationally. Every seller is required to ship inside the country they list in. A San Francisco seller listing a sealed Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Elite Trainer Box for $42 cannot mail it to São Paulo, Mexico City, Dubai, Manila, Mumbai, or London. A Tokyo seller with a 1999 Japanese Charizard cannot mail it to anywhere except inside Japan. To buy from either side of Mercari from outside its borders, you need a forwarding partner.
Selectido covers the US side directly — get a free Minneapolis address, check out on Mercari US like any American buyer, and we forward the package to 60+ countries. For Mercari Japan, we coordinate via a Tokyo proxy partner who receives the seller's shipment, repacks for international, and routes either through our hub or direct to you. Many collectors run both sides in parallel: US sealed product + Japanese vintage cards in one consolidated international box.

How Mercari pricing actually compares to retail and competitors
The reason Mercari has become a primary international destination is straightforward: prices on Mercari US sit consistently 15-30% below eBay for the same item in the same condition, and 30-60% below new retail. A sealed Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Elite Trainer Box that retails $50 at Target lists $38-42 on Mercari with a "Make Offer" button that often closes around $34. A new Sony WH-1000XM5 at $399 retail shows up open-box on Mercari at $245-265. A Le Creuset 5.5qt Dutch oven that retails $400 in the cream colorway sits at $185 on Mercari from a seller who got it as a wedding gift and never used it. Multiply this 30-50% discount across an entire wishlist and the math of using a US forwarder to access Mercari from outside the US becomes obvious very quickly.
The discount comes from the seller base. Unlike eBay, where roughly two-thirds of listings are from professional resellers, Mercari is still dominated by individual sellers offloading personal items — wedding gifts, post-college decluttering, ex-collectors stepping away from a hobby, parents selling kid's outgrown gear. Individual sellers price for "what I want to get rid of this for" rather than "what's the market max," which is exactly the gap an international buyer should be exploiting.
Mercari for collectors — where the volume actually lives
If you collect Pokémon TCG, Mercari US is non-negotiable. Sealed booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, premium collections, graded slabs (PSA 9 and 10), and single rare cards (Charizards across every set, alt-art trainers, Japanese promos) all appear at Mercari prices consistently below TCGPlayer Market and eBay. A graded PSA 10 base-set Charizard moves through Mercari multiple times a month. Sealed product is shipped sealed; graded slabs are protected in top-loaders during transit.
For Nintendo, Mercari is the best source for refurbished Switch hardware, JP-region Switch consoles, used physical games, and obscure first-party accessories. Switch OLED Mario Edition consoles list around $295 versus $349 retail. Used Animal Crossing carts in factory cases run $35-45 versus $60 retail. JP-region Switch consoles (with the no-region-lock advantage for Japanese games) are routinely 20% below US Nintendo eShop equivalents.
For cookware, Mercari has displaced eBay as the secondary market for Le Creuset, All-Clad, Staub, and Mauviel copper. The cream Le Creuset 5.5qt Dutch oven cited above is the single most-shopped piece in our queue from non-US buyers. Color rarities (the discontinued caribbean blue, the bonjour orange) command 10-15% over standard colorways but are still 50% below retail.
For audio, the open-box and lightly-used Sony WH-1000XM5, Bose QuietComfort Ultra, and AirPods Pro 2 trade at 30-40% under retail with full warranty transferability. Mercari is also the best source for vintage hi-fi — Walkman cassette decks, Sony Discman models, vintage Bose, classic Pioneer.
